World Cup Beatdown: Los Updates (Chile)

To celebrate this year’s World Cup, we’ve found the most football-obsessed DJs in electronic music and asked them to “represent” their home countries and share their predictions for this year’s championship.

Repping Chile, we’ve got Jorge González of the iconic Chilean protest band Los Prisioneros, one of Latin American rock music’s most important acts of the ‘80s. These days, after his work with Dandy Jack and Tobias Freund in Sieg Über Die Sonne, he’s best known for his duo Los Updates [a], with Loreto Otero. Their 2008 album ‘First If You Please’ steered Cadenza into uncharted waters of something approaching electro-pop, and was famously remixed by Ricardo Villalobos; more recently, they’ve kept the music coming with releases for Rebirth, Barraca, and more.

Personal bias aside, who do you think will really emerge as champions this year?

If it only depend on skills and their past performance record, Spain should easily win, but in the World Cup tradition usually plays a huge part, so it’s safe to bet on Brazil, Germany, or Italy, no matter how well they did in previous games.

How well do you think your national team will perform and what players should we be watching out for?

Ours is very much a really well balanced team, more than just spectacular stars thrown together on the pitch—like, let’s say, Argentina or France this year—and I wouldn’t be surprised to find Chile in the top four. Oh yes: Suazo, Valdivia, Medel, Sanchez, and especially Bravo, the excellent goalkeeper, will definitely get big clubs talking sweet to their agents after the tournament.

What has been your favourite World Cup so far?

I guess Germany 1974. Holland had one of the coolest teams ever: Cruyff, Rensenbrink, Rep, Suurbier, Krol… C’mon, I even have a track called “There’s No One Like Neeskens Playing Now” coming out soon. But they met Beckenbauer, Müller, Maier, and other deutsche demigods and went home almost empty-handed. Poland had Lato and Deyna, Chile had Figueroa, Caszely, the tracksuits were sharp and funky and most of the hairstyles looked daft… Yes, that’s my favourite so far.

What would be your ideal track for your team’s World Cup Song this year?

I’m writing it now in my head—I’ll record it as soon as I can and try to send it to the boys!

What songs would you pick for when your country wins and what song for when you lose?

For winning: ‘Everybody’s Free’ by Rozalla. Winning should be the definitive hands-in-the-air moment. I remember listening to this tune at a giant rave in L.A. in the early ‘90s and there are very few that can match it. For losing: ‘Dry Your Eyes’ by the Streets. (Yeah, I know it’s been used, but I like the tune. Reminds me of my beloved Specials…)

Finally, where will you be watching the tournament this year?

As our team relies heavily on Suazo to get goals done (he was top scorer in South America over Brazil’s Elano and Kaka and Argentina’s Messi, Higuain and Kun Aguero), I wouldn’t be that surprised to be a last-minute addition to the team and get to watch it from the bench. Now, if someone gets injured, I might as well be a fitting replacement, and will do it for free!
